Desert Rain – Indigenous Fine Art emerged as a gallery space in 2005
after exhibiting works from Indigenous arts at the Noosa Regional Gallery,
Noosa; in Brisbane; the Gold Coast, Queensland and interstate. The vision
of Desert Rain is to showcase select works in both traditional and contemporary
styles of Indigenous art and craft; and to provide an expose’ of works
to extend and encourage the viewer to learn more of this extraordinary
rich and diverse culture.
The owner/curator has come from a background of studying Anthropology,
extensive travel, and working in areas of Community Development for 12
years in Central Australia.
“As part of the ‘living whole’ Indigenous artistic expression is interwoven
into the very fabric of cultural experience – a way of keeping culture
strong, maintaining spiritual links with country and, associations with
kin and community. Through the changes in design and form depicted throughout
this collection one can view the progressive nature and vibrancy of Aboriginal
culture today.”The Desert Rain philosophy is not just art based- transcending
aesthetic concerns to evoke awareness of culture.
Not just art for its own sake - but for, on the one hand - the continuation
of a culture, and on the other - to provide an educational journey revealed
through the aesthetic beauty of these works.
A major focus guiding the acquisition of works is searching out new stories,
motifs, invention and creating an avenue for Indigenous artists, Indigenous
art centres and communities to exhibit their works, to tell their versions
of the Dreamtime, way of life and social connections.
With the move to the new location at Noosa Marina, the collection is ever
expanding, providing quality art and crafts that include ochre and acrylic
paintings, silks, jewelry, wood sculpture, prints, textiles and weaving,
along with calendars, diaries, cards and books, and Art Tours to the Northern
Territory.
